The cradle of European civilization and the birthplace of democracy, theater, and the Olympics, Greece is a first-rate tourist destination and for good reason. The historical treasures of Athens are a must-see and a visit to one or more of the myriad Greek islands is something one has to experience at least once in a lifetime. From the archaeological splendors of Crete and the stunning sunsets of Santorini to the soaring Mt. Olympus, the spectacular beaches, the delicious local food, and flavorful regional wines, Greece has something for everyone.
Outdoor enthusiasts will feel right at home in Greece as well. Adventure opportunities abound - from horseback riding on Mykonos to hiking along the caldera of Santorini, island trekking through the picturesque villages and lush valleys of Paros or Naxos, sea kayaking on Crete, cycling in Nemea, or rafting on the Lousios River in the Peloponnese.
Generally, the spring and fall are the best seasons to visit Greece as the temperatures are milder and the crowds not as overwhelming as in the summer. If this is your first time in Greece, we would suggest spending at least 2 - 3 nights in Athens to explore the iconic Acropolis hill and the rest of the must-see archaeological sites, but also to soak in the authentic charm of some of the capital city’s neighborhoods. Then, spend some time on one or two of the Greek islands. Mykonos and Santorini (each of which deserves at least 3 nights) are among the most popular destinations, but also tend to get overcrowded, especially during high season. Another popular first-time itinerary would include Athens, Santorini, and Crete.
If you have more time to spend in Greece, there are many attractive and under-discovered islands to choose from, such as Sifnos, Naxos, Paros, or Patmos. A point to remember when visiting the islands is that your itinerary will always depend on the seasonal ferry or air schedules between them. Alternatively, for those interested in ancient history or traveling in the off-season, the sites at Delphi, Mycenae, and Olympia in mainland Greece can be comfortably combined with a stay in Athens as well.
